Tips for Getting Stinky Odors Out of Your Dog’s Collar
Posted on September 6, 2022 by paigepesko
Dogs love to roll around in the mud and swim in murky water. They enjoy getting dirty at every chance they can. Unfortunately, bad smells can transfer to their collar. If your dog’s collar smells horrible, these are excellent tips to remove the odor from your dog’s collar.
Cleaning Synthetic Dog Collars
Create the habit of cleaning your dog’s synthetic collar when you bathe your dog. Cover the collar in shampoo, grab an old toothbrush, and scrub, scrub, scrub! Ensure you’re rinsing with hot water to kill all the germs on the collar.
Another way to clean a synthetic dog collar is to create a mixture of apple cider vinegar, baking soda, and hot water. Mix two to three teaspoons of vinegar and baking soda with the hot water and let the collar soak in the substance. After an hour, scrub the collar and rinse it in hot water.
The best way to let it dry is to hang it by the buckle. Avoid putting it back on your pup until it’s completely dry. Your dog could end up with yeast issues from the wet collar.
Cleaning Leather Dog Collars
You can clean a leather dog collar the same way as a synthetic one. However, soaking it will ruin the leather. To prevent cracking, don’t place a leather collar in direct sunlight or use heat to dry it. Your best bet is to let it air dry on the counter.
Don’t soak the collar if you want to use the baking soda and vinegar solution. Instead, dip a toothbrush into the solution and scrub. Immediately dry the collar with a towel, and then let it air dry. Use a pet-safe leather conditioner after the collar is completely dry.
Getting Rid of Skunk Smell
First, take a deep breath. Removing the skunk smell from a dog collar will take patience and a few washes. Your best bet for removing the stench is to soak the collar in a dish soap, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide mixture. Know that peroxide could discolor the collar. Use a degreasing soap to scrub the collar after soaking for a while. Rinse it off in hot water and then let it air dry.
Taking those few extra moments to scrub your dog’s collar while it’s in the bath will save you from smelling a stinky collar. It will also prevent the collar from becoming so foul you have to throw it away. Utilize the above tips to remove the stench from your dog’s collar.
